Part Two in a Series that is dedicated to drinking beer around the world.
As lovers of beer, we try our best to take a photo of every new beer that we sample while on the road, making for an awesome photo album with over 300 different types and brands of beer. Because tastes and preferences are so subjective, our goal for this series was not to find the “best beer in the world”, but rather to find “amazing beer moments” or “incredible beer drinking settings”.
Below are ten more unforgettable moments in beer drinking.
Cheers!

Stella Beer – Dahab, Egypt
Without a doubt, one of the most memorable settings we’ve ever enjoyed a beer. Dahab is a small scuba diving beach town located on the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt. The little beach cove is lined with restaurants and lounges that literally spill into the crystal clear water, providing unobstructed views of the Red Sea and pink sandstone mountains of Saudi Arabia.
The beer verdict – cold and refreshing on a hot desert day, but limited on flavour. We give it 7 out of 10

Victory Ale – Edinburgh, Scotland
Drinking beer in the United Kingdom is a treat on its own, but celebrating New Years Eve in Edinburgh steps it up a notch. The Hogmanay Street Party is one of the biggest outdoor New Years Eve celebrations on the planet and is definitely unlike any other beer drinking environment. Though a variety of beer was consumed that evening, the Victory Ale stood out as the best.
The beer verdict – Full body and loaded with flavour. We give it 8.5 out of 10

Speights Ale & Export Gold – Wellington, New Zealand
Traveling to New Zealand in May meant being in the Southern Hemisphere when the NHL Hockey Playoffs were taking place. As huge hockey fans, we needed to find a way to watch our home team, the Vancouver Canucks, compete in the playoffs. We were staying with friends in Wellington and managed to catch a live video stream on our small notebook. Drinking Speights and Export Gold bottles while hovering over the tiny screen was a surprisingly great way to catch the game!
The beer verdict – Speights is tasty, Export Gold not so much. We give them a combined 7 out of 10

San Miguel Pale Pilsen – Boracay, Philippines
There is something about a cold bottle of beer, sweating in the tropical humidity, that makes for a fantastic beer drinking moment. Add tall palm trees and humid jungle, white sandy beaches with aqua blue waters, seemingly never-ending happy hour specials with Bob Marley blasting through the beachside bar speakers and you’ve got island paradise at its finest!
The beer verdict – Though ice cold, clear and crisp, it has little flavour. We give it 7 out of 10

Kingfisher Beer – Udaipur, India
You may recognize the Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur as the setting for the classic James Bond Octopussy movie. You would be correct. What this photo does not capture is the rolling green mountains that surround the peaceful lake; not the landscape we expected to see in Rajasthan, India. The rooftop restaurants in India present amazing beer drinking backdrops, regardless of where you are, however this particular moment stands out as one of the most outstanding in all of our travels.
The beer verdict – too bitter, sour and flat for our liking. We give it 5 out of 10

Quilmes Beer – Buenos Aires, Argentina
Its Euro-inspired architecture, afternoon cafe culture and sizzling nightlife make Buenos Airesone of South America’s greatest modern cities. As the photo illustrates, we were visiting during the hot and humid summer months, which translates into perfect patio beer drinking.
The beer verdict – standard light lager taste, nothing special. We give it a 7 out of 10

Kirin Beer – Kyoto, Japan
We love everything about the Japanese food experience, especially the cold Kirin beer served in frozen beer glasses. We stumbled into a traditional Yakitori restaurant in Kyoto’s old town. There were no other foreigners in the small restaurant, but it was packed with young Japanese students enjoying a night out. It turned out to be a great immersion into the Japanese culture.
The beer verdict – Full bodied, light and delicious. We give it 8 out of 10

Imperial Cerveza – Tamarindo, Costa Rica
The Costa Rican standard! If you’ve been to Costa Rica, chances are you’ve enjoyed a cold Imperial Cerveza at some point. This unforgettable beer drinking moment was experienced at a beachside lounge after a fun day of surfing the Pacific waves in Tamarindo. Nothing beats relaxing in the tropical sun with a cold beer.
The beer verdict – Refreshing and light, average taste. We give it 7 out of 10

Singha Draft – Bangkok, Thailand
Ah, yes. Khao San Road in Thailand’s infamous sin city. For those that don’t know, it’s THE backpacking party central of Southeast Asia. One doesn’t have to walk too far before multiple beer drinking opportunities are presented. Khao San Road has a vibrant carnival-like atmosphere, though it does have a surplus of druken idiots. It’s the perfect place to sit back, drink cheap beer, eat great street food and people watch the night away.
The beer verdict – we love bottled Singha but this particular jug was flat and sour, leading us to believe it probably wasn’t even real Singha (hey, it is Khao San Road after all!). We give it 6 out of 10

Karlovacko Pivo – Split, Croatia
This memorable beer drinking moment comes from the picture perfect Adriatic Sea on the coast of Croatia. Surrounded by rugged grey mountains and stone beaches, the coastal city of Split is a Mediterranean beauty that embodies the Eastern European spirit.
The beer verdict – Light, slightly bitter but flavourful. We give it 7 out of 10

All these beer photos has made me thirsty, I think it’s about that time to enjoy a cold beer!!

You should check out the wide variety of beers found in the Caribbean! Here are just a couple we’ve had in our travels: http://www.uncommoncaribbean.com/tag/beer/
Thanks Patrick – we’ll check ‘em out. Loved drinking Red Strip in Grand Cayman last winter!
This is such a wonderful series. Although we’re not the biggest beer drinkers, your trip to New Zealand reminds me of the time we went to Berlin, bought 5 or 6 beer varieties from the local convenience store, and then holed ourselves up in our room watching any NHL stream we could find on our laptops.
Thanks for the kind words Jackie. Many of our most memorable travel moments (and un-memorable!) start with a cold beer…
What a great segment. We’ve been trying our best to do the same as we go along but some times the best beer moments are also the most forgetful ones…
Fully agree on the rooftop in India beer-drinking experience. I especially loved how they’d slip it into a tea glass and make you put the Kingfisher bottle under the table to avert the gaze of the authorities – nothing like an Indian speakeasy.

Of these beers, I have tried Imperial, Kingfisher and and Singha. I just got to try Imperial a few weeks ago when I was in Costa Rica and it was great. You’re right about Kingfisher too. I tried it and it was flat and lifeless – there are better beers from India than that.
I’m a lover of beer too so when I travel around I do the research on the beers that I should try. I consider it an essential part of my traveling.
Couldn’t agree with you more! I always get funny looks from people when I snap photos of my beer and food, but travel is so much more than sightseeing

Suntory is my fave brand in Japan, better than Kirin and they have better TV commercials too

I wasn’t as big a fan of the Suntory. I found it a bit too sweet and tangy, but I never refuse a cold beer!
