This is Part Three in a Series dedicated to drinking beer around the world.
As lovers of beer, we try our best to take a photo of every new beer that we sample while on the road, making for an awesome photo collection with over 300 different types and brands of beer. Because tastes and preferences are so subjective, our goal for this series was not to find the “best beer in the world”, but rather to find “amazing beer moments” or “incredible beer drinking settings”.
Below are ten unforgettable moments drinking beer around the world.
Cheers!

Byron Bay Premium Ale – Byron Bay, Australia
This memorable moment in beer comes from the sunny shores of Australia’s east coast. We enjoyed this 6-pack of beer with a good friend from Vancouver who was living in Byron Bay at the time. Nothing beats a cold beer after a day of surfing and soaking in the hot Aussie sun – let’s just say that this 6-pack didn’t last very long!
The beer verdict – Crisp, light, aromatic and refreshing. We give it 7.5 out of 10

La Paz Pilsner – Copacabana, Bolivia
This tall bottle of beer and margarita pizza was enjoyed at a charming guest house that offered fantastic views of the highest commercially navigable lake in the world – Lake Titicaca. After recovering from a bout of food poisoning that locked us in our hotel room for a couple days, we spent the afternoon exploring the small Bolivian beach town of Copacabana. We needed familiar food, so pizza was a safe bet. And you can’t have pizza without beer, can you?
The beer verdict - Sweet, malty and light. We give it 7 out of 10

Edelsteiner Premium Pils – Mykonos Island, Greece
Okay – I know what you’re thinking. “Isn’t that a German beer”? You would be correct in your assessment, but this moment is all about the landscape! This stunning view was from the patio of our boutique hotel, overlooking the picturesque Ornos Beach on Mykonos Island. The charming Greek Orthodox Church and smooth white stone buildings add to the authentic Greek experience that was felt that memorable autumn afternoon.
The beer verdict - Flavourful, full bodied and slightly bitter. We give it 8 out of 10

Kingfisher Premium – Agra, India
How priceless is this beer drinking moment? It has all the makings of a great travel story. Take a look in the distance, between the two bottle necks. As one of the world’s most recognized landmarks, the Taj Mahal needs little introduction. After about 2 hours of wandering the unmarked, confusing streets of Agra, we finally found a store that sold beer. Of course, being a religious country, we were advised to keep the newspaper wrapped around the bottle, “so that nobody would know”. Do you think we fooled them?
The beer verdict – Too bitter, sour and flat for our liking. We give it 5 out of 10

Japan’s Big Three (Kirin, Sapporo & Asahi) – Kyoto, Japan
Generally speaking, we are huge fans of Japanese food and beer. We couldn’t make up our minds because we like all three, so we took one of each! We enjoyed consuming these tasty beverages on the shores of a popular river in downtown Kyoto, amongst the celebratory crowds of several other foreigners and curious locals.
The beer verdict - Three thumbs up! We give them a combined 8.5 out of 10

Red Horse Beer – Boracay, Philippines
What is it about sandy tropical beaches on foreign land that makes for the perfect beer drinking environment? Crashing waves and swaying palm trees. Baking sun and hot, humid air. Bikinis, board shorts, sunblock and shades. Boracay is one of our favourite beaches, so it’s of little surprise that it made our short list of best beer drinking locales. It’s difficult to pinpoint this exact moment, as it quickly became a recurring theme during our extended stay in tropical paradise.
The beer verdict - Cold and refreshing, but average. We give it 6.5 out of 10

Fruh Kolsch – Cologne, Germany
While in Cologne, it is imperative that you sample its famous Kolsch (local draught brewed specifically in the Cologne region). There are several breweries to choose from, but Fruh is one of the most popular. The unique characteristic of drinking Kolsch is that it is served in a long, thin, cylindrical 0.2 litre glass. This beer drinking moment came from the stone basement of the century-old Fruh restaurant brewery in the main square of Old Cologne.
The beer verdict - Clear, fresh and hoppy. Delicious! We give it 9 out of 10

Efes Pilsen – Istanbul, Turkey
The one and only! If you’ve been to Turkey and you enjoy beer, chances are you’ve sampled its iconic Efes Pilsen. The beer is named after the ancient city of Ephesus and gets its unique flavour from rice that is added to the brewing stage. There were several Efes Pilsen moments during our time in Turkey, but this one stands out because it was taken at the home of a friend we were staying with. There is no better way to experience a culture than with a local, and the food always seems to taste better with a local leading the charge!
The beer verdict - Tangy and malty, bitter and sweet. We give it 7 out of 10

Leffe Blonde Ale – Brussels, Belgium
As one of the world’s best beer makers, our goal for Belgium was to sample as many locally crafted beers as possible. That said, there is something cool about drinking one the world’s most famous beers in its country of origin. I’m getting thirsty just thinking about it!
The beer verdict - Rich in flavour, the Belgium Blonde Ale is one of our all time favourites! We give it 9.5 out of 10

Bia Ha Noi – Halong Bay, Vietnam
It was hard to fully capture the magnificent scenery and also include the beer in this photo. Though the beer was overpriced, warm and mediocre, the incredible views have been permanently branded in our minds. Steep, lush limestone fiords poke up from the China Sea, acting as the perfect backdrop to a fleet of anchored “Junk” ships. An evening sunset enjoyed on the rooftop of the boat was the icing on the cake.
The beer verdict - Tangy and sweet, average at best. We give it 6 out of 10

We’re already getting Part 4 ready – it will be based on Canadian Beer drinking moments! Stay tuned
ah…..Canadian beer…………I was concerned that you had left out the best, but of course you are saving the bast for last
I just returned from Japan, and enjoyed sampling the brew. I have to agree with you, they make good beer!
Yes – love the Japanese beer. But more importantly, love the food they serve with the good beer!
Leffe is truly my favorite beer. I will advise to stick to the Blonde and Brunette versions. Their Ruby (I called it redhead to keep with the haircolor theme) is really not good. It is a fruit infusion that I thought would be like a lambique, but really isn’t.
One of my wierdest beer moments was in La Spezia. I was in Italy sitting in an Irish Pub surrounding by German beer advertisement. Either that or my friends in Bologna going out of their way to drink Miller. I know Italy isn’t known for beer, but ugh.
Hunting for Miller in Italy? That is a strange set of circumstances! LOL. You’re right, Italy doesn’t do beer very well. But they make up for it in vino.
Leffe is one of my Top 3 bottled beer. It’s deliciousness all wrapped up in a bottle! Haven’t tried the “redhead”, but not a big fan of fruity beer. Can’t even bring myself to adding lemon or lime to a beer, it’s a mental block I can’t seem to beat.
Awesome collection guys. I was dying when I saw the newspaper wrapped around the beer in India. We ran into the same thing in Rishikesh. The young, college-aged servers at a restaurant whispered in our ears that they could sell us beer. We love beer as well, so we were stoked. Then they brought out big cans of beer wrapped in tin foil. Hilarious!
Ya, it’s not the most descreet way to serve a beer! BUT, it makes for a great story afterwards…
Oh I do love a good cold beer. I’ve been spending the summer living just a few kilometres from Cologne, and have been schooled into the importance of choosing Kolsch over other, clearly inferior German beers. I lived in Byron for a few weeks prior to this, but I never actually got round to trying the Byron Bay brew, a crying shame I suspect. In Oz I was a big fan of the Coopers Red, although at over 6% it had a serious habit of melting one’s brain. Leffe has a similar effect, as do nearly all the Belgian beers I’ve ever tried!

Where abouts are you staying in Germany? We’ve got family living in various parts. Love the Kolsch experience!
Yep, Leffe is up there with the best, but Red Horse is horrible!
I was about to complain that this list is far too short, but then I saw it is Part 3 !!
I’m off to find the rest…

Agree with you on the Red Horse! It got a gracious 6.5 because it was always served super cold. We’ve got at least another 3 episodes coming over the next month, so check back in. Cheers!
Don’t for get great Caribbean beers like Banks, Sands, Kalik, Pitons, Carib and Red Stripe.
Cheers!

We had the La Paz brew in Copacabana, too! Though we also had Inca, which had the odd and unexpected taste of beer + Coke. ??
Presently downing a Patagonia cerveza in Esquel, Argentina. Keep up the good drink!

Good call on the 9.5 rating for the Leffe. Have you scored anything with a 10?
Love the Leffe! No, we have yet to award a 10. There are few beers that are worthy of such an honour. I’m a big believer that nothing is perfect, so a 9.5 is pretty much the best its gonna get!

Although I agree that Bia Hanoi isn’t great, I think part of the appeal of drinking beers abroad is looking at where you are when you drink them. My fondness for Bia Hanoi has to do with drinking it with a bunch of travelers on Bia Hanoi Corner in Hanoi last summer. I guess I wasn’t paying too much attention to the taste of it, more so, the thirst for adventure that I was wrapped up in.
I do remember though how expensive it was to buy the beer on the junks. Luckily, there were those small “convenient store” rowboats that would come up to the junks and sell drinks for cheap.
