Snorkeling the waters of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
As lovers of tropical beaches and warm aqua blue water, we were thrilled to be invited by Royal Holiday to visit its Punta Cana resort in the Dominican Republic.
Though we do love the snow and British Columbian mountain life in the chilling month of December, the thought of drinking fruity coconut cocktails and eating grilled seafood while basking in the hot Caribbean sun was very appealing, to say the least.
On the morning that we were supposed to hit the water, we were told moments before departure that “the weather conditions were not right for snorkeling”.
Disappointed by this news, our determined host Julio was unsatisfied and quickly jumped on the case, successful finding us a boat and guide. Apparently the weather was okay a few kilometers down the beach? I guess that’s just how things operate in the Caribbean!

We were thankful for Julio’s efforts and impressed that Royal Holiday lived up to its mission of creating great holiday experiences.
As far as the actual snorkeling goes, the Punta Cana reef has seen better days. There was a limited amount of fish and underwater wildlife, likely due to the dwindling health of the reef.
That said, we’ve been fortunate to snorkel and scuba dive some of the world’s best spots, so perhaps we’re unfairly setting the bar too high. Regardless, it was a great morning on the shimmering Caribbean waters. It was nice to leave the resort for a while and explore the lush, tropical island by boat.
