Blues Rugby Match in Auckland, New Zealand
Kiwi’s are just as crazy about rugby as Canucks are about hockey.
As lovers of live sporting events, we made it a goal to experience a live rugby match during our trip to New Zealand. We lucked out that during our four days in Auckland there was a game scheduled. The photo was captured at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland. The match-up was the Blues vs the Reds.
This was our first rugby game. In fact, we didn’t have a clue what the rules were and didn’t know what was going on half the time. But, in similar Canadian fashion, there’s plenty of beer on tap to keep things exciting!
Although the home team failed to come up victorious, it was a great way to experience New Zealand’s professional sports culture. It didn’t take long for us to gain an appreciation for the game’s skill and physical toughness.
I know we’re totally opening ourselves to a sports debate, but in our opinion, rugby doesn’t compare to a live National Hockey League game (but we’re extremely biased!). Yeah, that’s right. I said it!
This sounds like a great opportunity to test out our new Poll feature!

I think seeing a live sporting event is actually a really great way to experience a city or a country. Especially when it comes to a sport people are passionate about. Being Canadian I got to give my vote to hockey, but I’ve also never watched a rugby game (live that is).
Totally agree! We try to attend a sporting event in every country we visit.
Glad to see a fellow Canuck voting for hockey
Sorry I’m quietly chocking over your last comment that rugby doesn’t compare!!! Help! But we agree about the beer being important!!!
LOL. There we go, some Kiwi contributions!
I have to disagree! Rugby is definitely my favorite of those two sports to watch! (Though I enjoy hockey, too).
Go All Blacks!
Boooo!
I have to go with rugby. We have hockey here in the US. However, I don’t get to see much rugby. And these guys are incredibly tough. So are hockey players – but without all of the equipment!
It’s true, both sports are quite tough!
Being the Kiwi that I am, I have to go with Rugby (I’m not being biased, am i?).
However my first live rugby game experience (other than at school etc) wasn’t until I went to see the All Blacks (NZs National Rugby Team) play in Buenos Aires. It’s always strange being in a stadium vs watching a game on TV.
I’d love to see a Live Hockey match one (as in at the stadium, not on TV)
Nothing beats watching a sporting event live with crazy fans and loud sound systems!
If you like watching fast sports, you’d love a live hockey game.
Well, gotta throw some love towards hockey. Granted I love watching all sport, hockey reigns supreme (although being an OIler fan as of late might change my vote if things don’t improve
It’s awesome to experience the national sport in their own country though isn’t it? We had the opportunity to watch a futbol match in BA and the experience was amazing. I can understand why they don’t let the fans drink beer in the stands, it’s pretty wild.
Oiler fan?!?
They’ve got some great young talent, let’s see what they do with it!
I’m Canadian so i have to go with hockey, but my boyfriend is Australian and trying to bring me over to the dark side… So far I’ve only seen baseball and football games in the US (which are insane btw) but I have a long list of overseas sporting events ahead of me, rugby being right at the top.
Ah oh, an Aussie and a Canuck… the rugby vs hockey battle is inevitable! Glad you’re sticking with the home team!
