A Preliminary guide to Food and Sleep in Prague (leaving more time for the art of exploration…)

Being that travelling is all about exploration and adventure, one of the most prominent pleasures of experiencing a new place is stumbling across the exquisite uniqueness and beauty it has to offer. Nothing beats finding that little hidden village encased in a cultural time-warp, or trekking a barely touched trail to a backdrop of divine landscape and open skies.

Like many people, I come from the school of thought where a little practical planning goes a long way, however it’s the little diversions from the itinerary that often lead to the hidden treasures.

If travelling to Prague, Czech Republic for the first time, here’s an introductory guide to a range of accommodation and restaurant options; so that once you know where to get rested and fed, you have more time to spend embarking on your adventure!

Prague, Czech Republic

Where is Prague?

Prague is situated in the north-west of the Czech Republic, just on the Vlatava River. As it’s the capital city, it has a sizable metropolitan locale, with external air, road and train transportation options.

Accommodation in Prague

Like most capital cities, Prague offers a wide range of options to suit a variety of budgets. These all have their own translations in Czech, so it might be an idea to get a guide book to help you out.

On the higher end are the Hotel Mucha, or Hotel Waldstein, both within close proximity to the city centre. It is here that you’ll find a concentration of shops and the five main areas that make up the historical centre; Old Town, New Town, the Jewish Quarter, Lesser Town and Castle District.

If splashing out on a luxury hotel cuts into your adventure budget, some more economical options are; the Pension Platan, 5 minutes from Old Town Square; the Clarion Hotel Prague or the Plaza Alta Hotel.

Or if travelling in true back-packing mode, then St Christopher’s Hostel at Mosaic House is a charming and beautifully decorated little hostel on Odboru. There are also popular budget options such as Apartments Zelva and Bartolomej in Old Town.

Restaurants in Prague

Prague benefits from a plethora of restaurants and cafes, exhibiting both local Czech cuisine and food from around the world. Finding somewhere to eat is not a problem, especially closer to the city centre, but hardcore culinary explorers might want to sample some of the smaller, more rural eateries.

To get you started on your gastronomic travels, here are a list of some popular Prague restaurants and where to find them:

  • Novoměstský pivovar (The New Town Brewery) found at Vodičkova 20, Prague 1
  • Na staré kovárně v Bráníku found at Kamenická 17, Prague 7
  • Kolkovna found at  Kolkovně 8, Prague 1
  • La Degustation Bohême Bourgeoise found at Haštalská 18, Praha 1 – Old Town (Staré Město)
  • Klášterní pivovar Strahov (Strahov Monastery Brewery) found at Strahovské nádvoří 301, Prague 1
