The Temples of Kathmandu, Nepal
Most travelers that visit Nepal use Kathmandu as a quick stopover before moving on to either the Himalayas or lowland jungles. Although Kathmandu is a dirty and chaotic city that gets mixed reviews, it’s also a vibrant city filled with deep spiritually and rich history.
We took the recommendations of friends that had previously traveled to Nepal and decided to spend a few days exploring the capital city. We booked a cheap tour that ended up being a private driver that took us around the city, introducing us to the religious side of Kathmandu.

Listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the iconic temples of Kathmandu are some of the most remarkable places of worship we’ve encountered on our travels.
We witnessed human cremations at Pashupatinath Hindu Temple, played with curious monkeys at the ancient Swayambhunath Stupa, wandered in awe at the stunning Durbar Square, and sipped sweet tea on a rooftop restaurant as we marvelled at the legendary Boudhanath Stupa.

Thanks Raymond – it’s a great country to visit. It’s an outdoor mecca combined with strong spirituality and culture, everything you want out of travel! (although the food was only okay – not my favourite)

Great stuff – difficult to believe that this mythical city gets overlooked by so many travellers; it would be my main reason for visiting the country.

Indeed! It’s kinda like Bangkok in that respect. Many people just blaze right through it, when in fact it’s a fun destination all on its own!

Love the vibrant colors you captured in your photos! We’ve not yet been to Kathmandu – reminds us of Ladakh! It also looks like you made the right decision to stay and explore the capital city for a few days! Nice job on the photos!

I’m one of those people that felt like Kathmandu was an unfortunate stop-off point. That city was a turd! It did have its high notes though, and I’ll admit that the further I get from that trip, the more I just chuckle about the whole thing. I’ll go back one day I’m sure; but I’m pretty positive I won’t be staying too long in the city. Small doses of that place is good with me! LOL I would like to see Boudhanath though, and I wouldn’t care to go back to the monkey temple… that place was kind of neat.

Haha, it’s not for everyone…it’s more of an aquired taste
Wow, those pics are amazing! It bummed me out to hear what Dan had to say about Kathmandu, but it is still on my bucket list
We loved Kathmandu, it’s crazy and chaotic but it has its character

Fantastic imagery in both pictures and words–hard to resist the combo of cremations & curious monkeys! I also love the funky soundtrack to the UTube video! I hope to make it to Kathmandu at some point…I have a college friend there who runs a non-profit called Giving Asha that helps orphans…I did an interview with her about the culture and its class system which was thought-provoking…thanks for “taking me there” from afar!
