Discovering the Jewel in Russia’s Crown
Russia’s capital city counts itself as one of the most advanced cosmopolitan cities in the world. Situated on the Moskva River, Moscow is the jewel in Russia’s crown and makes for a brilliant trip if you’re after something slightly different from the other Westernized cities of Europe and North America.
The first stop on any Moscow itinerary has to be the Red Square. This World Heritage Site is an historical Russian symbol that has come to represent Moscow across the world.
On one side is the Russian Kremlin, Moscow’s iconic political landmark. The Kremlin is a complex of government offices, palaces and cathedrals, some of them open to the public. It’s a World Heritage Site in itself!
Next on your list of architectural wonders in Moscow has to be St. Basil’s Cathedral, built by Ivan the Terrible in the mid-sixteenth century. Bordering the Red Square, this astounding building consists of nine separate chapels, each of which is capped with an individual dome.
An entirely different wonder of the world lies on the other side of the Red Square – the GUM department store. The largest store in Russia, this shopping experience is sure to satisfy even the most discerning of shopaholics.
The tour continues with a visit to Poklonnaya Hill, one of the highest spots in Moscow and home to the Victory Park that displays many tanks and other vehicles used in the Second World War.
Whilst there are many varied and interesting museums and galleries in Moscow, one thing that sets the city apart from its European contemporaries is its devotion to open, green spaces. Moscow has many parks and botanical gardens that are free for visitors. Put the Central Park of Culture and Rest and Izymaylovsky Park at the top of your list and enjoy a different side of the bustling metropolis.

Wow! That Poklonnaya Hill looks like a beautiful place. I’ve been to Sheremetyevo airport once for a connecting flight but I really regret not having chosen to stay a day or two in this wonderful city.
