Bernkastel, Germany’s Picture Perfect Christmas Village
Last night, we visited the 2nd Annual Christmas Market in Vancouver. We were instantly taken back to Christmas of 2009, when we experienced Europe’s festive Christmas Markets for the very first time.
We loved the German Christmas Markets so much that we even considered starting one when we returned home to Vancouver. Coincidentally, the following Christmas was the first time that Vancouver hosted a Christmas Market, so we were a season too late for that idea.
Of all the cities, towns and villages we visited that Christmas in Europe, our absolute favourite was Bernkastel, a picturesque medieval town located on the Middle Moselle River in Western Germany (between Frankfurt and Luxembourg City).
It reminded us of those little snowy Christmas villages that decorate many houses and retail stores during the holiday season. The cute wooden buildings look like real life gingerbread houses with the fresh dusting of snow – it was the picture perfect Christmas village that our imaginations created when we were children!
