Rooftop Panorama of La Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires, Argentina
This week’s photo comes from a rooftop hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
La Recoleta Cemetery is located in the stylish Recoleta neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, the capital and largest city of Argentina. The massive necropolis is the final resting place to Argentina’s elite, famous and wealthy, ironically making it the most expensive and sought after real estate in Buenos Aires.
We don’t usually include cemeteries on our sightseeing itinerary, but La Recoleta Cemetery is something special. Our curiousity lead us through a seemingly never-ending maze of stunning architecture, intricate statues, haunting tombs and marble mausoleums. See more photos of La Recoleta Cemetery here.
As this photo illustrates, the graveyard is like a walled city within the city, complete with its own streets and intersections. To get a sense of scale, look at the people wearing red jackets in the bottom right.

This is definitely the coolest one I’ve ever been to. I think I’ve been inside 4 times, and you always find something new. A lesser-known but still impressive cemetery in Buenos Aires is Chacarita. And it’s not overrun with tourists.

The Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires is quite interesting. You can get another goodish photo of it from slightly above by visiting the ex-Cloisters/now museum in the church that is beside it.
One of the cemeteries I found interesting (not necessarily cool) is the one in Punta Arenas, Chile. It has immaculately kept trees that look like giant chubby fingers, the main entrance is closed since the woman that donated it only wanted her to go through it on her death (you go through a smaller side door) and there is a statue of the “unknown” indian covered in flowers and crap.
Not exactly cool, just different and interesting.

That’s a really cool skyline, so much more interesting than the sky scrapers in the background.
I love visiting cemeteries when I travel. This looks like one I definitely have to hit!
