Daydreaming in the giant sand dunes of Huacachina, Peru
Huacachina is a stunning desert oasis on the coast of Peru, located just outside the city of Ica, about 4.5 hours south of Lima and 10 hours from Arequipa (by tourist class bus). As the photo illustrates, it’s quite the sand box!
The sand dunes stretch for miles in every direction, which wasn’t the environment we expected to experience while traveling around Peru. After all, Peru has the mighty Andes Mountain range AND the Amazon Rainforest – so the last thing we expected to see were giant sand dunes?
We hiked to the top of this massive dune to witness the sunset from the highest viewpoint in Huacachina. It’s quite the workout hiking up the side of a sand dune, so this magical view was earned!

Have you visited giant sand dunes before? What did you think?
Share your experience in the comments section below, we’d love to read about it!

I missed the dunes in Peru but have seen plenty while living in the Middle East. There’s no better place to make you feel small than sitting under the stars in the dunes that stretch on for miles.
Couldn’t agree more! Where are you living now Jill?
Oh man. I was just in Peru. I wished I had more time to explore the rest of it. This picture makes me wanna go back and see the rest of Peru. Outstanding photo!
Thanks Karen! Glad you like the photo.
It’s quite the sight!
Really cool shot. I had no idea a place like this existed n Peru. It’s such a diverse country.
It really is John. When you factor in its size, I’d argue it’s one of the most diverse countries on the planet.
WOW!! What amazing picture. I am Canadian, my wife is Peruvian. We are currently living in Toronto. We are considering moving to Peru. We would love to know about other poeple who has moved to Peru and their experience. Any information will be helpful.
Thanks
I had no idea there was a desert like this in Peru. Very diverse country and would love to visit one day!
Like Jeremy, I didn’t know that a desert exists in Peru but big thanks to you. You gave a spotlight on it and this can be part of my itinerary in my next vacation. Love the shot!
