Give the gift of travel this Mothers Day
Do you remember taking family vacations with your parents when you were a kid? Sitting around a campfire on a road trip or waiting in long lines at amusement parks?
Those memories are what motivate us to travel with our boys.
We enjoy our time together on the road and hope that when they get older they will reflect on our family travels with a smile. Surprisingly, many people don’t continue to travel with their parents as adults (unless, of course, the purpose is to have an extra pair of hands to babysit).
We are fortunate to have traveled with our parents as adults and, with Mothers Day around the corner, we want you to consider taking mom on a special trip.
Not sending mom on a trip, but actually going on a trip… together.
Back when we lived out of a backpack for a year, we would often talk to our parents about meeting us somewhere on the journey. As time progressed, and we were away from home for several months, our parents toyed with the idea of meeting us somewhere on the road.
We were fairly flexible with our itinerary, so when our parents made the decision to join us in Europe, we cashed in some of our Aeroplan Miles and restructured our travel plans to meet them. Fortunately, Aeroplan Miles are good for most Star Alliance members, which gave us plenty of options.
We met Cameron’s mother in Greece and toured the Greek Islands. We explored the Acropolis and Parthenon in Athens and sipped cold Mythos beer while watching the sunset over the white-stoned village of Oia on the island of Santorini (first picture).
We joined Nicole’s parents in Munich, Germany before taking a road trip along the Adriatic Sea, passing through Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. We got lost in Venice’s labyrinth of alleys (pictured below) and strolled along the waterfront promenade in the Croatian city of Split, before finishing the trip at an outdoor festival in Vienna, Austria (2nd picture above).
Recent trips with our parents have had us floating in a hot air balloon over the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia, wine tasting and river boating in Germany (pictured below), sailing in Mexico and road tripping through the California desert.
We have fond memories from these travel experiences and are happy to have had the opportunity to get to know our parents as adults, as friends. Traveling with family has strengthened our relationships and helped us connect on a completely different level.
Understandably, planning a trip with your mother takes time, so this year might be a bit of a stretch (but it can be done if you’re up for the challenge!). Instead of the reverting back to the usual flowers and dinner, why not make this a Mothers Day she will remember forever.
Pick a destination you both want to explore and start researching.
It doesn’t have to be a trip to the other side of the world; it can be a weekend escape or a return to a place you haven’t visited together in years.
For those in Ontario, you can redeem Aeroplan Miles to take mom on a Niagara wine and culinary lunch adventure, discovering the charm of Historic Old Town Niagara on the Lake before witnessing the majestic Niagara Falls.
Or, for those in Montreal, treat mom to champagne tea at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth, indulging in a selection of refined delicacies, loose leaf teas and a flute of Moet & Chandon.
Vancouverites can take the scenic drive to Whistler for a deep tissue massage and bath experience at Scandinave Spa, with parking, towels, and bath robe included.
