The Gift of Giving

Did you know you can Donate your Aeroplan Miles?

What do you give the person who has everything? Here’s an idea. Instead of spending money on a gift that they might never use, why not make a donation on their behalf to a charitable cause?

Aeroplan just announced a new initiative to the Beyond Miles donation program. Aeroplan Members can now donate miles on behalf of a friend or loved one and they will receive an e-card in return. It’s a great option for those last minute shoppers looking for inspiration. Of course, it doesn’t need to be the holiday season for you to contribute.

How does it work?

Members can choose to donate to 10 Canadian Beyond Miles charitable partners or more than 450 charitable pooling accounts that help support local communities around the world. We talked about a few the charities last year – read that post here.

Since the program started 8 years ago, it’s been a huge success.

More than 410 million miles have been donated to Aeroplan’s charitable partners like Doctors Without Borders, Free The Children, and Earth Day Canada. And, recently, Doctors Without Borders reached a HUGE milestone of more than 100 million Aeroplan Miles donated.

100 million miles! That’s an incredible accomplishment.

If you have a few extra miles to spare, here are a few charities you should consider…

Helping Kids

Air Canada Foundation – In December, Aeroplan will be matching all miles donated to the Air Canada Foundation. Through the Air Canada Foundation’s Hospital Transportation program, Air Canada helps sick children reach medical treatment not available in their community.

For some children, specialized medical treatment is not always available locally. For their families, the cost of air travel is also an additional burden posing serious economic and emotional hardship.

War Child Canada – War Child helps rebuild war-affected communities to provide the support necessary for children to experience a stable childhood. Over 12 million miles have been donated to this Beyond Miles Partner.

Animal lovers

Bear Valley Rescue Society – Located in Alberta, Canada Bear Valley Rescue helps rescue, care and rehome abandoned, unwanted, or neglected horses.

Meow Foundation – Located in Calgary, Alberta the MEOW Foundation is a feline specialized no-kill humane society for the rescue of stray and abandoned cats.

Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides – A national charitable foundation that was created by Lions Clubs across Canada. Its mission is to assist Canadians with a medical or physical disability by providing them Dog Guides at no cost.

Love of the Arts

Pacific Opera Victoria – Pacific Opera Victoria builds operas from the ground up in Victoria, British Columbia.

Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra – Located in Winnipeg, Manitoba the Symphony delights nearly 100,000 city and rural audience members each year with its innovative programming and musical excellence.

Donating amounts can be as much or little as you like. And it’s a great way to give back without having to give cash. The Charities use the donated miles for a number of things like travel, car rental, hotel stays, merchandise and prizes for fundraising.
