Here’s our memorable Aeroplan story

Back in 2009, we were on an extended trip around the world. We were half way through this trip when Cameron’s mother decided she wanted to join us in Greece. We had already booked our flights and they were not easy to change, so we had to get creative.

We looked at purchasing additional flights, but we couldn’t find anything that fit within our budget. We had been living out of a backpack for several months and were on a shoe-string budget. On a whim, we decided to check out the Aeroplan website to see if we could redeem our miles for flights.

Our original flights had us flying from Dubai to Amman.

We planned to travel around Jordan for a few weeks, including visits to the Dead Sea, Petra and Wadi Rum. However, we put this trip on pause so that we could meet up with Cameron’s mother.

We ended up purchasing round trip flights from Amman to Cairo. After spending a few weeks exploring Greece and the Greek Islands, we would return to Jordan to continue with our original travel plans.

We only had a 2 hour layover in Amman before we were to connect to Cairo, so we had very little room for error.

Unfortunately the trip from Dubai to Amman didn’t start well.

We had a pretty big hiccup when we went to check-in at the airport in Dubai. The flight was oversold and we were bumped from the flight. This was the first time we had ever been bumped from a flight, so we were in a state of shock.

Feelings of confusion, anger and frustration consumed us. Why is this happening to us? Why now? If we didn’t make this flight, we would miss our connection in Amman and a sequence of unwanted events would take place.

We sat in the terminal for two hours, watching every passenger drop off their bags and pick up their boarding passes. It was pure agony. We were hoping two seats would come available but it wasn’t looking good. As each person passed, we felt more and more deflated.

Within minutes of the gates closing, we were called to the counter and handed two boarding passes. We made it on the plane just as the doors were closing!

It was as close as you can get to missing your flight.

We made our connection from Amman to Cairo and prepared ourselves to spend the 8 hour layover sleeping on the floor of the Cairo International Airport.

It was not an ideal scenario, but it would not be the first (or last) time we slept on an airport floor.

When we arrived in Cairo we overheard an Egypt Air representative talking to a passenger about the “complimentary hotel transfer”. I asked the agent what this was about and she told us that our connection to Greece included a complimentary hotel night. Score! We had no idea airlines did this anymore.

Not only did we avoid sleeping on the cold airport floor, we were treated to a fantastic 5 star hotel with complimentary transfers and breakfast included! It was a fantastic and unexpected surprise.

Don’t you love it when that happens?

The next morning we caught our flight to Athens and met up with Cameron’s mother. We spend the next few weeks exploring the Greek Islands before returning to Jordan.

I’m not sure we would have been able to make this trip happen without redeeming our Aeroplan Miles. I’m glad we did, because it was a trip we’ll always remember.
