Sunset at Ortahisar Castle in Cappadocia, Turkey
Surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and otherworldly rock formations, Ortahisar is a fairytale town located in the heart of Cappadocia that will surely leave you speechless.
Most travelers stay in the popular town of Goreme, often referred as the Gateway to Cappadocia, because of its close proximity to the world famous Goreme Open Air Museum, its variety of funky cave hotels and its easy access to many extraordinary hiking trails.
But many visitors don’t realize that Cappadocia is home to several nearby towns that are equally impressive. Fortunately for us, the manager of the cave hotel we stayed at took us on a tour of the neighbouring towns so that we could get the full Cappadocian experience.
We couldn’t believe our eyes when we first caught sight of Ortahisar and its dramatic rock castle. The town is literally built into the walls of a rocky canyon, complete with ancient cave dwellings and secret passageways. It’s quite remarkable.
As this photo clearly illustrates, it’s a fascinating city that should be on every Cappadocia itinerary. We were very thankful that our impromptu tour guide brought us to Ortahisar at sunset – it was a travel experience we’ll never forget.

Goreme is already on my bucket list, but I was pleased to read this article. I like traveling through the less popular tourist sites, so Ortahisar sounds fabulous! Thanks so much for sharing! Feel free to check out my blog too – downthewrabbithole.blogspot.com
