Top 10 Tourist Attractions in the World
Okay, I admit it. I’m just as guilty as you are for being seduced by this juicy title.
When you see a title like “top attractions in the world” you can’t help yourself, which is precisely why you’re reading this post.
It’s this curiousity that lead me to find this list in the first place. I have so many email subscriptions that I literally get 100’s of emails every day. Most get deleted, but the few that survive the daily purge usually have a catchy title that grabs my attention – case in point.
TripAdvisor.ca sent me the results for its 2013 Travellers’ Choice for Top 25 Landmarks in the world (see the full list here). I don’t know the exact method used to calculate the rankings, but they are based on feedback from millions of travellers around the globe.
Here are the Top 10 Attractions in the World for 2013 (according to TripAdvisor.ca)
- Machu Picchu – Machu Picchu, Peru
- Angkor Wat – Siem Reap, Cambodia
- Taj Mahal – Agra, India
- Petra World Heritage Site – Petra, Jordan
- Bayon Temple – Siem Reap, Cambodia
- Great Cathedral and Mosque – Cordoba, Spain
- Church or Our Savior on Spilled Blood – St. Petersburg, Russia
- St. Peter’s Basilica – Vatican City, Italy
- Ancient City Walls – Dubrovnik, Croatia
- Main Market Square (Rynek Glowny) – Krakow, Poland
Keep in mind, we have only highlighted the Top 10 in this post. The full list includes the top 25 (see the full list here).
Have you visited any of these world attractions? Do you agree with the rankings?

I’ve only been to four of the top ten so I guess I better get busy! Though some of these rankings are questionable. The Great Wall should be much higher, and where are the Pyramids, Acropolis, Coliseum and Library of Celsus?
I agree. It seems the list is missing some pretty big ones! The list has a lot of temples/cathedrals as the main tourist attractions, which I found to be interesting. I guess natural attractions (Grand Canyon?) and remote (Easter Island?) aren’t being ranked.
Wow! I’ve only been to two and thought I was well travelled! It’s a shame Africa and Australasia don’t even feature in the top 10 and South America only had one. Perhaps it’s influenced by the places people feel more comfortable travelling to?
You make a good point Arianwen. These rankings are based on consumer feedback, so I can only assume this is impacted by people’s experiences and perceptions. That said, I think it’s a solid reflection of “what’s hot” right now.
I’ve only been to 7/25. Wow! I have a LOT of traveling to do. 🙂
I would have to add Sagrada Familia in Barcelona to that list. It’s my FAVORITE!
We’ve never been to Sagrada Familia but will certainly add it to the list when we’re in Europe again
Damn is that a weird list. Most of those countries aren’t even the most touristy countries. Nothing in Paris is even on the list! And somehow nothing in Thailand gets a mention, even though Thailand is a huge tourist hotspot…but I guess it’s more distributed, and Angkor Wat is more concentrated than a coffee-infused SAT-taking high school valedictorian.
There are a few on there that I would never have thought would have made the list, and a few that should have made the list – like the Eiffel Tower, Pyramids, Berlin wall, etc – but this list was compiled by consumer feedback, so there’s a lot of subjectivity
I think that a top 10 of world attraction is a tough list to make, especially if it is in meant to list sites with the most amazing at the top! A list of 50 or a 100 of the world’s top attractions, listed randomly perhaps….
