Donate your Aeroplan Miles this Holiday Season
For many people, the holidays are about giving. Whether it’s giving gifts to your kids, sharing a meal with family or donating to a worthy charity, the holidays are a time to do something nice for someone else.
Unfortunately, the holidays can also be expensive. By the time you buy presents, groceries and festive decorations, it’s easy to watch the bank account drain and credit card debt rise.
We have been active Aeroplan users for years but, until recently, we had no idea that we could donate our Aeroplan Miles to a variety of charities. It’s pretty cool to be able to give back without giving cash. And there are no limitations, so you can donate as little or as many Aeroplan Miles as you like.
So, if you’ve recently redeemed some Aeroplan Miles and you have a few extra Miles leftover, here are a few charities you should consider donating to…
Free the Children – is a Canadian charity and educational partner that has built an award-winning holistic and sustainable development model, Adopt a Village, that has brought more than 650 schools and school rooms to 55,000 children in need – children who otherwise would not have the chance to go to school.
Doctors without Borders – is an international organization where volunteers assist with projects in more than 60 countries affected by violence, neglect, famine, natural disasters and tragedy.
Air Canada Foundation – has developed a hospital transportation program that helps sick children reach medical treatment not available in their community. Through this program, Air Canada helps alleviate expensive travel costs often associated with illness by providing Aeroplan Miles to pediatric hospitals across Canada.
For Canadian charities, you might want to consider:
Canadian Rugby Union – Help Canada’s rugby team reach their goal of getting to the Summer Olympics in 2016. Rugby Canada uses donated Aeroplan Miles for training overseas, assistance with travel to training camps, and to allow extra team members to travel in case of player injury.
The Fraser Institute Vancouver – is a Canada-wide, non-profit organization that conducts research on public policy regarding key socio-economic issues. Donated Aeroplan Miles are used by the Education Department for the benefit of students and teachers.
Finally, for that person that’s impossible to buy for, there are a variety of items unique to the Aeroplan program. When you redeem Miles for certain items, like an autographed guitar by Jann Arden or Nickelback, not only do you get an awesome gift, but 100% of the proceeds go to Aeroplan’s partner War Child Canada or a charity of the artist’s choice. It’s a win-win!
