Starting 2018 with Sun, Sand and Family
Our 2018 has started off strong. Tomorrow, we head to the Riviera Maya in Mexico to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. We plan to do a vow renewal ceremony on the beach at sunset.
Shortly after returning from Mexico, we trade the sun for snow and head to Manning Park Resort, a local mountain that we have yet to experience. For Cameron’s 40th birthday, we’re planning a trip to a special destination – once plans are fully confirmed we’ll be sure to tell you about it!
Renewing our vows in the Riviera Maya
10 years ago we were married at the Iberostar Del Mar with 40 close friends and family in attendance. That trip continues to bring back great memories and will always be one of the best trips of our lives. It was so much fun having friends and family together on vacation for an entire week. If you get the invite to attend a destination wedding – do it! You won’t regret it.
5 years ago we had the opportunity to revisit the Riviera Maya when our friends were married at the Gran Bahia Principe Akumal. Since we were already in the area, at the same time as our 5 year anniversary, we extended the trip to revisit the Iberostar to celebrate our anniversary.
One evening, while sitting on the balcony reminiscing, we decided we would return for our 10 year anniversary. And, who knows, maybe we will revisit every 5 years!
It’s hard to believe that 5 years have already passed since our last visit. It’s insane to think that our 10 year anniversary is less than 4 days away. This time, we’ll be returning with our two boys who are now 4 and 6 years old. A lot has changed in the past 10 years!
Back to the Iberostar Paraiso del Mar
We often don’t return to the same place twice – let alone 3 times. But the Iberostar Paraiso del Mar has special memories for us. It’s nice knowing what to expect from the moment we get off the plane.
We’ll be at the Iberostar for 8 nights. On February 4th it’s the Super Bowl and we plan to watch it at the resort. This will be our 8th time watching the Super Bowl in a Caribbean location. Based on past history, it seems like we tend to travel to a warm destinations in February.
For this trip, we have partnered with the Iberostar Paraiso del Mar to experience its vow renewal package. The ceremony will take place on the beach at sunset. We haven’t seen Braydon this excited in a long time. He can’t wait to wear his new tie. Connor is also really excited about wearing his new shoes. My (Nicole) parents will be joining us, too. It will be nice to share this experience with them.
While in the Mayan Riviera, we have two excursions planned – we will be visiting Xcaret and Xel-Ha. We’ve wanted to get back in the water to snorkel and these attractions will give us a great opportunity to try something new.
The Grand at Moon Palace in Cancun
After our stay at the Iberostar Del Mar, we are switching things up and heading up to Cancun to stay at The Grand at Moon Palace Resort. We’ve showed the boys a few pictures and the resort looks like a kid’s paradise. The resort has so many kid friendly activities, including a bowling alley, kids club, water park, lazy river, games rooms and more.
We look forward to sharing our experience with you upon our return.
A few tips we learned from previous trips to Mexico
- Make sure to be up to date in your vaccinations – especially Hep A.
- Bring lots of sunscreen. It’s really expensive if you need to buy it in Mexico.
- Bring LOTS of small US dollar bills. Tipping is expected and most people do not have change.
- Make sure you get Travel Insurance prior to leaving. Don’t risk it.
- Book your airport transfer before you arrive. We use Cheap Transfer Cancun and recommend them.
- Several Canadian airlines, like Air Canada, WestJet, Interjet and Air Transat, fly direct from Vancouver to Cancun. The flight takes about 6 hours.
