How our Back-to-School Shopping is helping us save for our next big trip
It’s hard to believe that come September we will have TWO boys in school. It’s amazing to think that only a few years ago we were changing diapers and struggling with sleepless nights.
Last week we were sitting on a dock in the Algonquin Highlands of Ontario and the discussion about Back-to-School shopping came up in conversation. Our oldest son, Braydon, is super excited about getting new running shoes and a new backpack for his upcoming Grade 2 class.
I remember dropping Braydon off for his first day of Kindergarten as if it was yesterday. He smiled and waved back at us before wandering off with his new classmates, if he’d been doing this for years.
We were more of a mess than he was.
We’re not sure how our youngest, Connor, will react on his first day of Kindergarten. I suppose we’ll find out soon enough. There will be tears, I’m just not sure if it will be him or me.
It feels like yesterday when we introduced Connor to world.
As we sat on that dock, with our toes dangling in the lake, we were reminded how much our travel style has changed over the years. With two boys now in school, we can no longer jump at every opportunity to travel. We have to respect their school schedules and be mindful of the disruption to their learning and routines.
We travel more by redeeming our Aeroplan Miles
We were able to make this trip to Ontario happen because we redeemed our Aeroplan Miles. We see good value using our Aeroplan Miles for domestic flights, which tend to require only 25,000 miles per seat.
A decent airfare for Vancouver to Toronto (and vice versa) is $500-$700, depending on the day and time of departure. For our family of four, that’s over $2,000 in airfare. We can get four round-trip domestic flights for 100,000 miles plus taxes, which is very attractive.
We end up saving a lot of money by actually using our miles, instead of banking them for a rainy day.
However, now that we’ve redeemed most of our Aeroplan Miles, we need to replenish the account. We’re always on the lookout for ways to maximize the rewards from our everyday purchases, so we’re happy to see that Aeroplan has launched a campaign that caters to Back-to-School shopping.
